Corrections & Collections: Architectures for Art and Crime

Corrections & Collections: Architectures for Art and Crime
$180.00

America holds more than two million inmates in its prisons and jails, and hosts more than two million daily visits to museums, figures which represent a ten-fold increase in the last twenty-five years. Corrections and Collections explores and connects these two massive expansions in our built environment. Author Joe Day shows how institutions of discipline and exhibition have replaced malls and office towers as the anchor tenants of U.S. cities. Prisons and museums, though diametrically opposed in terms of public engagement, class representation, and civic pride, are complementary structures, employing related spatial and visual tactics to secure and array problematic citizens or priceless treasures. Our recent demand for museums and prisons has encouraged architects to be innovative with their design, and experimental with their scale and distribution through our cities. Contemporary museums are the petri dishes of advanced architectural speculation; prisons remain the staging grounds for every new technology of constraint and oversight. Now that criminal and creative transgression are America s defining civic priorities, Corrections and Collections will recalibrate your assumptions about art, architecture, and urban design.

Remote Performances in Nature and Architecture

Remote Performances in Nature and Architecture
$160.38

Outlandia is an off-grid artists’ fieldstation, a treehouse imagined by artists London Fieldworks (Bruce Gilchrist & Jo Joelson) and designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects, situated in Glen Nevis, opposite Ben Nevis. It is performative architecture that immerses its occupants in a particular environment, provoking creative interaction between artists and the land. This book explores the relationship between place and forms of thought and creative activity, relating Outlandia and the artists there to the tradition of generative thinking and making structures that have included Goethe’s Gartenhaus in Weimar, Henry Thoreau’s cabin at Walden Pond and Dylan Thomas’s writing shack in Laugharne. Based on a series of residencies and radio broadcasts produced by London Fieldworks in collaboration with Resonance 104.4fm, the Remote Performances project enabled twenty invited artists to consider and engage in transmissions, sound performances and dialogues on their artmaking strategies immersed in this specific rural environment of mountain, forest and river; flora and fauna. Some artists engaged in dialogue with people living and working in the area with a range of specialisms and experience in, for examples, forestry, mountain culture, wildlife, tourism, and local history. This book explores the ways in which being in the field impacts on artists and permeates through to the artworks they create. It considers the relationship between geography and contemporary art and artists’ use of maps and fieldwork. It charts these artists’ explorations of the ecological and cultural value of the natural environment, questioning our perceptions and relationships to landscape, climate and their changes. The book is an inspiring collection of ways to think differently about our relationship with the changing natural environment. The book includes essays by Jo Joelson, Francis McKee, Tracey Warr and Bruce Gilchrist, and texts, images and drawings by the artists: Bram Thomas Arnold, Ruth Barker

Irish Contemporary Landscapes in Literature and the Arts (Hardcover)

Irish Contemporary Landscapes in Literature and the Arts (Hardcover)
$125.62

Looking at representations of the Irish landscape in contemporary literature and the arts, this volume discusses the economic, political and environmental issues associated with it. Questioning the myths behind Ireland;s landscape from the first Greek descriptions to present day post Celtic-Tiger architecture, the contributors explore its artistic representations (fictional and visual), arguing that the experience of humans with place is preserved in landscape, history and myth. The book further argues that contemporary landscape practices, from landscape planning to landscape designing, are imbued with myth. Just as the myth of loss is at the root of many cultural, political and economical statements, the myth of unity, belonging, globalization and its twin, the myth of speed, have in turn contributed to creating new landscapes and new ruins.

Modernism and Affect

Modernism and Affect
$109.00

This book addresses an under-researched area of modernist studies, reconsidering modernist attitudes towards feeling in the light of the humanities’ turn to affect. Modernism and Affect engages with contemporary theories of affect but also turns to a surprisingly wide range of theoretical models – including psychoanalysis, phenomenology, critical theory and poststructuralism – as it emphasises the complexities of modernist affect and emotion.

Wonderlands of the Avant-Garde: Technology and the Arts in Russia of the 1920s

Wonderlands of the Avant-Garde: Technology and the Arts in Russia of the 1920s
$99.95

In postrevolutionary Russia, as the Soviet government was initiating a program of rapid industrialization, avant-garde artists declared their intent to serve the nascent state and to transform life in accordance with their aesthetic designs. In spite of their professed utilitarianism, however, most avant-gardists created works that can hardly be regarded as practical instruments of societal transformation. Exploring this paradox, Vaingurt claims that the artists’ investment of technology with aesthetics prevented their creations from being fully conscripted into the arsenal of political hegemony. The purposes of avant-garde technologies, she contends, are contemplative rather than constructive. Looking at Meyerhold’s theater, Tatlin’s and Khlebnikov’s architectural designs, Mayakovsky’s writings, and other works from the period, Vaingurt offers an innovative reading of an exceptionally complex moment in the formation of Soviet culture.

Emergent Urbanism: Urban Planning & Design in Times of Structural and Systemic Change

Emergent Urbanism: Urban Planning & Design in Times of Structural and Systemic Change
$99.56

In the last few decades, many European and American cities and towns experienced economic, social and spatial structural change. Strategies for urban regeneration include investments in infrastructures for production, consumption and communication, as well as marketing and branding measures, and urban design schemes. Bringing together leading academics from across a range of disciplines, including Douglas Kelbaugh, Ali Madanipour, Saskia Sassen, Gregory Ashworth, Nan Elin, Emily Talen, and many others, Emergent Urbanism identifies the specific issues dominating today’s urban planning and urban design discourse, arguing that urban planning and design not only results from deliberate planning and design measures, but how these combine with infrastructure planning, and derive from economic, social and spatial processes of structural change. Combining explorations from urban planning, urban theory, human geography, sociology, urban design and architecture, the volume provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art overview, highlighting the complexities of these interactions in space and place, process and design.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings & Interior Designs

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings & Interior Designs
$150.00

The great Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½ï ½1928) has come to be seen as one of the most influential early modern designers. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, whom he rivals in popularity today, Mackintosh viewed the design of furniture and interiors as a vital part of his architectural work. Today, original Mackintosh pieces are fabulously expensive, but reproductions and objects based on his design ideas are still wildly popular. This is the fourth edition of the primary reference work on Mackintosh furniture and the first time it has been in print in twenty years. Completely revised and redesigned, with new information and many new color illustrations, the book documents every surviving piece of Mackintosh furniture and every drawing, as well as his interior designs (including reconstructions of interiors that have been destroyed). This is an essential reference for collectors, art historians, designers, and anyone interested in the origins of modern design.

The eleven original chapters and chapter-length introduction consider the affective dimensions of a range of forms and media – including literature, architecture, philosophy, dance, visual art, and design – tracing modernism from its origins in the nineteenth century to its afterlives in the postwar period.
